September 2019

September has begun and that means our first virtue of the year is RESPECT!  Students shared what Respect means to them…Catherine said, “Respect means being kind to others.”  Angelina said, “Respect means listening to the teacher.”  They are right on and understand what it looks like and why this social skill is so important.

3rd Grade will work on being respectful to our classmates and friends at SMA over the next few weeks as well as practicing our Social Skills.  Following Instructions is something we work on all year long and we are currently practicing Greeting Others.  Students are already displaying this skill when greeting prospective families!

3rd Grade is off and running in Science.  Our first unit on Engineering Design has kept students busy building paper towers and catapults!  Students are asking questions, developing models, carrying out investigations, and analyzing data.  We are solving problems just like real engineers do!

In Math, we have begun multiplication and applying the Mathematical Practices to what we are learning in our lessons.  Students are identifying patterns and are using mathematical vocabulary when sharing their ideas.  Students are also drawing arrays to show their thinking and learning new properties such as the Commutative Property. I am so impressed by their willingness to challenge themselves in the first few weeks of school!

We are all looking forward to our upcoming Back to School Bonfire!  It will be a great time to catch up with friends and eat a s’more or two!  It’s good to be back!!!
